September 20th 2010 - Soda is a gateway drug

Soda is a gateway drug.

It started as just a can or 2 week. Just away to relieve some stress. No big deal right?

Before I knew it I was up to 3 cans a day. Baby cried, I want soda. Husband makes me mad, I want a soda. Somedays I even went for the one liter bottle. And we aren't talking diet here. Nothing but full on HFCS for me. My mom expressed concern, but I assured her I had it under control.

But then a couple weeks ago, the soda just wasn't enough for me anymore. I was fiending for something with a little more kick. I decided to try a milkshake. The high was great, but coming down was awful! Shameful.

I spiraled so quickly. I'd get a milk shake and make sure to drink it before I got home so I wouldn't get judged. Sometimes I even got fries...Fries and a shake, a deadly combo known on the streets as a "grease ball."

How did I get so out of control so quickly?

I stepped on the scale today. I have gained 8 pounds. The "I'm a nursing mom and need the calories." excuse just isn't cutting it.

I'm staging my own intervention. It's time to kick the habit.

My soda addiction has always been a problem for me! I try to stop but I always go back to drinking it like how most people drink water!

And yes, once I return to drinking all this soda, I crave more carbs than usual. Definitely a gateway drug. lol

i somehow managed to kick soda cold turkey for a while now. my trick? freshly brewed green tea, that i drink either hot or iced. and lots of water.

when i was pregnant with iain i went cold turkey as well and took up drinking flavored seltzer water because it wasn't so much the taste of soda i liked, it was the carbonation.

good luck momma! <3

You crack me up!
I wish you luck though. It's SO hard to stop doing something that you know is bad for you, but just tastes so good.

I hear you. For about two weeks we got in the habit of stopping at Peets every afternoon and I would get a blended iced coffee with lots of chocolate syrup and whipped cream ... basically a caffeinated milkshake. It was good. But so many empty calories. And so expensive!

Plus I had to buy both kids drinks as well. So I cut myself off!

I too have fight the soda addiction. One thing that has helped me has been drinking sparkling flavored mineral waters (I used to hate that stuff, but eventually it tricks you to think that it is in fact soda) and also Propel. As far as milk-shakes- how about chocolate milk instead? That always cures my hankering for a shake.
