Greyson has started the process of learning to read. It's happening all on his own timeline. No pushing from me. Just a sudden interest in knowing what sounds the letters make and which letters words start with. It's so adorable. Everything is, "Ball starts with Buh-Buh-Buh-B" or "Daddy starts with Duh-Duh-Duh-D!"
I try to use encouraging statements rather than just "Oh you're so smart!" Such as, "wow, you've really been practicing!" "You're doing such a great job on the letter sounds!" "You'll be reading in no time!"
I also try to be encouraging when correcting him. If he is trying to figure out a letter but gets it wrong I say, "It's ok, just you need a practice a little more." Then next time when he gets it right he says, "I've been practicing!" I've been using "You just need to practice" for a LOT of things as he gets discouraged by not being able to do something properly right away. Like spinning a top or cutting out a shape.
Last night we were in the back yard and he says, "Backyard starts with B!" I said, "Yup, Good job buddy." and he says, "I'm startin' to learn how to read!"
When I though about eventually teaching my children to read, I never imagined that it would be such a relaxed and joyous process. We have flashcard and workbooks, but neither are tools that I push on him. They are here and if he wants to play with them he can. Watching the evolution is amazing and even more amazing is seeing how excited he is about it.
The other big accomplishment from Grey is that he can snap his fingers. He is SO OVER THE TOP excited about this! He was snapping his fingers this morning and said, "I can't wait to show my friends at school!" Then, not only did he show his friends, but he also showed some other moms and his teachers. He just thinks it is THE coolest thing.

that's exactly how iain started. and then while in preschool, his teacher noticed that iain was trying to read and worked one-on-one with him while a few times a week. his grandparents also bought him the leapfrog tag reading system and that really made a difference.
now he's teaching himself how to put letters/sounds together to make words and write them.
its really cool to see. i love when he asks me to help him write a word or asks me to check if his words are spelled right. i can't wait til he starts writing his own stories :)
