November 5th 2010 - Holidays

They holidays are coming up and I have been brainstorming some ideas for gifts for Grey. I want to stay on the creative side of things.

Lately he has been into puppets. So I think I am going to make him a puppet making kit. A few tube socks, various buttons, yarns, and other accessories. I know they make premade puppet making kits but I think putting one together would be fun!

At story time they use a felt board. I think i might get him one to hang on the wall and get a bunch of different felt. Then we can go through his books and make felts to go along with his stories.

I am so excited about these two ideas that I almost want to make them now and give them to him early! But, I will be a good girl and wait.

Aside from that, we might get him a couple new tag reader books. I firmly believe that he has ENOUGH as far as electronics go (he can navigate a computer and plays educational games on my ipod) and am trying to stay on the natural/creative side of things. Stay away from characters, TV related, etc.

For Winter, I want to get one of those wooden activity cubes with a bead maze...mostly because G still loves bead mazes, so know they will both enjoy it. And then probably some wooden teething toys from Etsy. 9 month olds don't need much right?

The other day Grey got very excited when I mentioned Christmas. Not because he knows presents are coming, but because he wants to bake Christmas cookies and make decorations! Hopefully we can continue this trend for a few more years (or even longer).

I'm sure you'll have fun making your own feltboard stories and nursery rhymes, but if you're looking for more ideas, Judy Sierra's book "The Flannel Board Storytelling Book" ($19 used on Amazon) has stories adapted for telling along with line drawings to use as templates for cutting the felt. I used to use it when I was working as a children's librarian.
